What manned guarding means

Manned guarding is an officer on a site for a shift. They stay. A patrol visits and moves on.

We do this in shops, on building sites, in offices, warehouses and industrial parks. A shop may need someone on the floor. A building site may need the gate watched after the trades leave. An office may need the door in the day and a lock-up at night. A warehouse is often the gates, the yard and who goes into the loading area. The job says which of those this officer is there for.

What the law expects of contracted guarding

Where a security company supplies someone to guard premises against unauthorised access, damage or disorder, that is manned guarding under the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The officer needs the right SIA licence for the activity. A security guarding licence covers guarding premises and property. It does not cover door supervision at licensed premises. A door supervisor licence covers both door work and security guarding.

K1’s door supervisors are SIA licensed. On a guarding assignment the role is agreed so the work and the licence match. K1 is not an SIA approved contractor, and it does not hold ISO or a similar certification. What is agreed is the type of site and the duties for that site.

How an assignment is written

Before the first shift, both sides should be able to answer a short list. Which hours. How many officers. Where they stand or patrol. Who they let in. What they do if they find a door open, a person on site who should not be there, or a fault that makes the building unsafe. Who they call, and how the report gets back to you.

A site in fit-out is not the same site once it is trading. Tell K1 when the hours, the entrance or the risk change, and the assignment can be rewritten. If you are unsure whether you need a guard on site or a series of patrols, that can be talked through before anyone is booked.

What we provide

Static on-site officers

A person at the premises for the shift you need, rather than a patrol that calls and leaves. The hours can be a working day, a night, a weekend, or the pattern the site already uses.

Access control

Who comes through the gate, the door or the yard. Visitors, contractors and staff can be checked against the rules the site already uses, and people who should not be there can be turned away.

Checks around the site

Locks, gates, loading doors, plant, stock and the perimeter, on a route agreed for that property. The officer is there to notice what has changed since the last check.

Retail and supermarkets

A visible presence on the floor of shopping and retail outlets, supporting the store’s own rules on theft, disorder and who is allowed to remain in the shop.

Construction sites

Cover from the gate to the materials and plant on a building site: signing people in where the site asks for it, and watching the site when the trades have left.

Offices, warehouses and industrial parks

Reception and after-hours cover for offices. Gates, yards and loading areas for warehouses and industrial parks. The task is keeping that premises secure across the hours you specify.

What it is, the hours, who comes and goes, what has gone wrong before, and what ‘secure’ looks like there. Photos or a simple site plan help.

We review the requirement
Numbers, shifts and the tasks the officer is there to carry out. If a visiting patrol would do the job, we say that instead of selling a static post.

The assignment is agreed
You know the hours, the duties and what the officer will report. Contracted guarding of premises is licensable, so the role is set against that as well as against your brief.

Guarding starts
The officer works the site. You can say what is working and what you want changed, and the assignment is adjusted.
